Maximizing Your Laser Engraver Investment: 5 Essential Tips for Jewelry Businesses
Laser engraving can bring tremendous value to your jewelry business, but to maximize this investment, you need to tap into its full potential. Here are some expert tips to get the most from your laser engraver:
1. Invest in Training from the Start
Comprehensive training can make a world of difference. “I bly recommend that everyone has a laser training from the manufacturer,” says Kathi Bogenschutz of Fable Designs in West Jordan, Utah. After experimenting with their laser engraver for four months without significant success, they received training from a LaserStar Technologies trainer, which set them up for smooth and efficient operation.
2. Ensure Level Accuracy
For precise engraving on rings, especially when adding text or patterns, accuracy is key. Bogenschutz suggests using a mini-level on top of the scan head housing to ensure it's level, which ensures that text and designs are engraved with uniformity.
3. Reduce Reflection
When centering a ring for engraving, metal reflection can be a challenge. To cut down on glare, Bogenschutz’s laser technician places a non-glossy piece of paper, like a business card, on the metal to reduce reflectivity. Also, be cautious when engraving pieces with gemstones; reflected light can damage colored stones. Dana Smith of Pieter Andries Jewelers recommends using a small amount of poster putty over the gemstone to protect it from the laser’s light.
4. Practice on Brass Blanks
Before engraving a customer’s piece, test your design on brass blanks to ensure settings like power and depth are correct. “We test different .jpg files on brass to ensure it marks accurately and deeply enough,” says Smith. Practicing on blanks helps you avoid costly errors and ensures a perfect finish on client pieces.
5. Plan for Future Sizing Adjustments
When engraving a logo or other marking inside a ring, choose a location that won’t be affected if the ring needs resizing. “I place our logo where it will remain untouched during future adjustments,” advises Patrick Scis of Mavito Fine Jewelry in New York City. Also, make sure to double-check the laser’s focus and ring measurements in multiple spots, as rings are rarely perfectly round. For intricate designs, measure carefully and engrave all marks in one session to ensure alignment.
