How to Make a Clear Silicone Mold

A step-by-step guide to measuring, mixing, pouring, curing, and demolding with CAD/CAM LMR RTV Clear Mold Rubber.

Two-part platinum-cure silicone rubber.

Gram Scale

For accurately measuring Parts A and B.

Mixing Container

Use a clean container and mixing tool.

Model & Mold Box

Your pattern and a suitable containment area.

Prepare Your Model

Make sure the model is clean, dry, and free from contaminants that could interfere with the silicone cure.

Some materials can cause platinum-cure silicone to remain tacky or uncured. When compatibility is uncertain, perform a small test first.

Tip: A clear acrylic sealer can help prevent cure inhibition on difficult surfaces. Allow the sealer to dry completely before applying silicone.

Measure the Silicone

Bring the material to room temperature, approximately 73°F (23°C), before use.

Accurately weigh Parts A and B using a gram scale according to the specified mix ratio.

Important: Accurate measuring is critical. Use a scale rather than measuring by volume.

Mix Thoroughly

Pre-mix Part B before combining.

Mix Parts A and B thoroughly for approximately 3 minutes. Scrape the sides and bottom of the container several times while mixing to ensure the components are completely incorporated.

Remove Air

Vacuum degassing is recommended for the best results.

Place the mixed silicone in a vacuum chamber and allow the material to rise, break, and fall. Continue vacuuming for approximately 1 minute after the material collapses

Recommended: Use a vacuum pump capable of pulling approximately 29 inches of mercury (1 Bar / 100 kPa).

Pour the Mold

Pour the silicone slowly into the mold box.

For best results, pour from one location at the lowest point of the containment area and allow the silicone to flow naturally around the model. A slow, consistent pour helps minimize trapped air.

Make sure the silicone extends at least 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) above the highest point of the model.

Allow to Cure

Leave the mold at room temperature until fully cured.

Demold & Start Casting

Once fully cured, carefully remove the silicone mold from the model.

The clear/translucent material makes it easier to see the model inside the mold and determine where cuts or separations should be made.

New silicone molds naturally provide good release characteristics. For wax and gypsum, a release agent is generally not necessary.

Safety & Handling

Use in a properly ventilated area. Wear safety glasses, long sleeves, and vinyl gloves when handling the material.

Do not use latex gloves. Latex can interfere with the curing process.

Always test material compatibility on a small, non-critical area before committing to a full mold.
